Blairquhan is situated in the beautiful wooded valley of theWater of
Girvan in the south west of Scotland.
The Blairquhan stretches
of the river are perhaps the most attractive of its length, the upper
reaches being open parkland. The middle beat is open to the public
for fishing. Fishing is fly only, the best period being from mid-July
through to the end of October. There are also two trout lochs on the
estate both with boats available to tenants. 2005 proved to be an excellent
season for salmon.
Blairquhan Castle
The magnificent Castle dating back to 1346 and surrounded by a beautiful
country estate on the banks of the River Girvan, is approached by a three
mile drive beside the River Girvan. The current castle was commissioned
by Sir David Hunter Blair and built by the famous Scottish architect
William Burns in 1821-1824, remaining in the family unaltered since its
original creation. The castle offers well laid out accommodation suitable
for all sorts of entertaining from house parties for up to 25 people
to conferences and corporate entertainment. Weddings and celebrations
for larger parties can be accommodated with the addition of a marquee
if required. The magnificent back drop is ideal for filming and fashion
shoots and meetings for up to 80 people can be accommodated with the
library and small drawing room ideal for discussion groups and relaxing.
Post meeting diversions such as golf, fishing and clay pigeon shooting
can be arranged, as well as visits to neighbouring castles. 7 self catered
cottages available all year round.
Shooting
Blairquhan is one of the more desirable places to shoot in Scotland.
There are about 30 shooting days each year for pheasants, ducks and partridges.
The average day is about 200 but smaller days can be arranged. Low flying
birds are not encouraged and the drives are all scenic. Lunch is provided
in a Finnish cabin by the side of a Loch.
Golf and Other Interests
A short walk along the river is the village of Straiton, perhaps the
prettiest in Ayrshire. It was recently included in a book on 'The 25
most beautiful villages in Scotland'. This is, of course, the only county
in Great Britain that can boast two venues for the Open Championship,
Turnberry and Troon. However, there are many other courses close at hand
for which varying degrees of skill are required.
Culzean Castle, the
flagship of the National Trust, perched high on the cliffs, is only
10 miles away with a beautiful sandy beach below. Finally,Ayrshire
is the land of Burns, with his birthplace at Alloway about 12 miles
distant. This is an ideal place for a family and fishing holiday.
