Perched on the most northerly tip of Scotland lies Caithness, a county in contrast to the rest of the Highlands. Flat, but never featureless, this is a wild landscape that’s drenched in archaeological finds and the influence of the Vikings. Quiet and peaceful, Caithness offers a distinct change in the pace of daily life. It is rich in fishing – the trout lochs are renowned and make a regular pull for many fishermen – while there are also fine shooting and stalking opportunities. With its miles of
sweeping and accessible coastline, sailing, boating, sea angling – and
even some fantastic surfing – can be found in Caithness. The
county town of Thurso has all the amenities you would expect – shopping,
golf, swimming and pony trekking – while nearby Scrabster Harbour
is the sea gateway to discovering Orkney, Shetland and Scandinavia
