The The River Deveron lies between the River Spey and the River Don and enters the Moray Firth at Banff. Although not as well known as some, those who have discovered the River Deveron consider it to be Scotland's real hidden gem. It has consistent runs of salmon from April right through the season's close on October 31st , with Carnousie and Netherdale producing 284 salmon and grilse in 2006..

In addition to its salmon fishing the River Deveron is also well known for its sea trout fishing. This gets under way in May with the cream of the night sea trout fishing in June when some hefty specimens may be encountered. Like the nearby River Don, The Deveron also has a healthy head of wild brown trout and produces some of the best river brown trout fishing in Scotland.

Andrew Flitcroft, the editor of Trout & Salmon magazine, and Crawford Little, well known salmon fishing author spent three memorable days fishing Carnousie and Upper Netherdale with author Richard Baker. They enjoyed some excellent sport with 13 grilse and two salmon. The beats have modern excellent fishing huts and there is a wide variety of pools on each beat, varying from fast rocky runs to slow holding dubs. Access to the beats is good although some walking is required to reach the furthest pools.

A full time ghillie is employed who is able to show you the water, and provide local valuable advice.

Accommodation

Waterside Lodge provides very comfortable accommodation in two converted cottages overlooking the Carnousie beat which have been extensively refurbished to provide one single house with sitting room, kitchen/dining room and four en-suite twin/double bedrooms. In addition there is a separate single en-suite bedroom for a cook or additional guest. Adjoining the main house is a rod room which includes drying facilities, deep freeze etc. and a separate games room and a first floor study with full internet connection. The lodge is provided on a self catered basis but inclusive of linen and towels. A cook may be available by prior arrangement to cook all meals or evening meals only as required.

Ferry Cottage overlooking the Upper Netherdale fishings has all been recently refurbished to provide a very comfortable alternative to Waterside, sleeping seven in two doubles and one single with two bathrooms in the cottage and one twin and bathroom in an adjoining annexe. The cottage is also provided on a self catered basis but inclusive of linen and towels.

The Fishing

Carnousie and Upper Netherdale fishings lie upstream of Turriff and provide a mixture of single bank (Carnousie) and double bank (both Upper Netherdale beats) for four rods on three rotating beats for salmon, sea trout and brown trout. Salmon and sea trout enter the river in April, building up to the main runs in July/August/September and October, and fresh fish can be expected right through to the seasons close. Sea Trout fishing from May onwards can be excellent, with the cream of the wild brown trout fishing in April and May when some real specimens of 5lb plus may be encountered. Each beat has a modern fishing hut and there is a wide variety of pools on each beat varying from fast rocky runs to slow holding dubs. A stocked brown trout loch lying behind Waterside Lodge is available to its tenants.

Roe buck stalking and Rabbit shooting is also available to tenants if required.
