The isle of Jura , one of the Inner Hebridean islands off the West coast of Scotland lies between Islay to the south, Mull to the north, Colonsay and Oronsay to the west, and the Argyll peninsula of Knapdale to the east. The island as a whole extends to some 94,000 acres and derives its name from the Norse word “deor-oe” or deer island. Some 28 miles in length, and from 3-8 miles wide, the island is almost bisected in the centre by Loch Tarbert, and is dominated by the famous “Paps of Jura”, three peaks rising to nearly 2500 feet.

Jura is easily accessed from the mainland by ferry from West Loch Tarbert to either Port Ellen or Port Askaig on Islay. Thence it is a short ferry crossing of only 800 yards across the Sound of Islay from Port Askaig to Feolin on Jura. Images of Jura
