Home > The Thurso Fishings Syndicate - Rules of Conduct – (Also applicable to guests and tenants)

•  The Syndicate's fishings on the Thurso River are divided into 12 beats. No more than two rods may fish each beat at any one time.

•  Every member will comply at all times with the provisions relating to the allocation and rotation of fishing rights contained in the Syndicate Constitution. Members are responsible for ensuring that their guests/tenants comply with these provisions.

•  If members let their rods or wish unaccompanied guests to fish, then they should provide each tenant with written authorisation.

•  Fishing is permitted during daylight hours. Although rods may be shared, shift fishing is not permitted.

•  Every rod will be fished in a sportsmanlike manner.

•  Salmon and sea trout parr, gravid fish and kelts must be returned to the river; fish hooked other than by the mouth must be returned to the river.

•  Fishing is by fly only. Fishing with bait, prawn, worm, spinner, spoon or any other lure is expressly forbidden.

•  Rods are entitled to keep all fish caught, subject to any catch and release rules instigated by the Caithness District Salmon Fishery Board or by statute. Under the Salmon Conservation ( Scotland ) Act 2001 it is illegal to sell salmon and sea trout caught by rod and line.

•  Every rod must properly record all fish caught in the Syndicate record book which will be held for safekeeping by the River Superintendent; returned fish must also be recorded.

•  Cars must be parked in such a way as to avoid obstruction to others. Fishermen should be aware that livestock may be present.

•  Every member, guest or tenant will be responsible for leaving the Syndicate's property secure on departure with any lights turned out and fire guards put in place.

•  Rights of access to the fishings are restricted and every person using them will respect the property of others at all times and ensure that gates are left as found and if in doubt shut.

•  No shooting of any kind is permitted. Any dogs must be kept under strict control.

•  The Country Code will be observed at all times and no fires will be lit. No litter will be left in or around the fishing huts or shelters or on the river banks.

•  Any person who causes damage or becomes aware of any damage, however caused, to any of the Syndicate's property will notify the River Superintendent immediately.

•  Any rod observing any disturbance or foul play on the part of another rod will report the same immediately to the River Superintendent, who will be entitled to ask any rod to withdraw from the river in the event of any breach of these rules or the terms of the Syndicate Constitution.

•  The River Superintendent will have full responsibility for ensuring that the rules of the Syndicate are fully adhered to.

•  The Landlord reserves the right to take a cast of any fish weighing 35lb or over and to take scales from any fish for scientific or record purposes.
