2009 SEASON

It is now 4 years since the Netting at the mouth of the Thurso ceased and the rod catch has increased dramatically during that period. The first fish of the season was taken in late February and despite challenging spring conditions the season turned out to be one of the best for almost a generation, with excellent sport throughout all beats, including several fish of over 20lbs. Again, most fish were returned, although “catch and release” continues to be at the angler’s discretion.

We witnessed an incredibly large smolt migration, which is a positive sign for the years to come. Grilse arrived later than expected and indeed were still entering the River in early October. The River Superintendent was pleased to report that almost all of them were clear of Anisakis Simplex (Red Vent). With good rainfall throughout the summer, sport was productive right through until the end of the season despite many salmon running the fish pass into Loch More in both August and September.

Improvements in 2009

There have been several improvements during the year, including:

• repositioning of the access gates to beat 2

• River bank strengthening at the Mire Pool on beat 8

• a boat for crossing beat 6

• all luncheon huts received a “nature themed” makeover

• bench seating was built and positioned on several beats

with further investment and improvements being planned for 2010 and beyond.
